GromFest Sept 2011
GromFest Day 3 (Scroll down for Day 1 and Day 2 reports)
We had a cracker of a final day in Pumicestone Passage, with 15kot average winds, and all the groms getting out on the flat shallow water. The advanced riders sessioned with world champion Andy Yates, learning backrolls and frontrolls and improving body position, while the beginners learned new skills from Mike and Tom on the sand bars.
Everyone was stoked with the whole event – Gromfest 1, got three excellent days of wind and great weather, we had a stella crew including the World Champion in freestyle, Juniors National Champion in waves and the mens and womens Wave champion runners up. The team taught 9 groms all under 14 years old, of which 6 were newcomers to the sport. Thanks must go to Lisa Hickman for shooting the video, Channel 7 news for creating a great news piece on the event, Tim Morrow from Kawana State College, Mat Colefax from M8 and F-one and Beaver from KBM for helping out on Day 2 and to our coaches, Andy, Tom and Mike
Check out this gromfest video created by Lisa Hickman on Days 1 and 2.
All the groms loved the camp and all their parents were stoked as well. I looks like we will have to put on more of these development programs focussed on the juniors in our sport. Bring on the summer school holidays for Gromfest 2!
GromFest Day 2
Another great day which saw the young groms battling 20kt winds on small kites. The beginner group had heaps of fun body dragging down wind and have really got the hang of flying those trainer kites while those that were up and riding showed off their style. Channel 7 news did a piece that we were really pleased with ..definitely worth delaying lunch for!
Below is a gallery of some of the day 2 action and is of the groms who are already riding and mentor Tom. Tristan, Caolin and Beau were fantastic to watch.
GromFest Day 1
A fantastic day at Currimundi. Nine Groms, aged between nine and fourteen years old enjoyed light but consistent winds from the NE all afternoon. The sun was shining, music pumping, kites flying and grommets smiling all day. Andy, Tom, Mike and Lisa made sure the group was having a god time all day, and learning loads. Channel 7 news crew came down to do some interviews and prepare for a story on Tuesday night.
The star of the show was young Erin Brookes, just nine years old and totally dominating the kites on her first day. The news crew loved her work and straight away picked her out for an interview.
All the groms enjoyed themselves, but unfortunately the more advanced riders didnt get to test themselves in the light winds. Everyone is frothing for the stronger winds forecast tomorrow. 15 – 20 knots seabreeze – yehaaa. bring out the 4m kites.
Stay tuned for more reports in the following days.
