DETAILED INFO

Snow Kite Course

We will chose the 4 best days of the week to venture into the National Park back-country wilderness.  Every day will be an adventure to search for the best wind, terrain and snow to slash, boost, carve and leave tracks.  Daily forecasts will allow us to plan specifics.

Professional mountain guides will get us out and back safely.

You will learn:
- Backcountry skills,
- snow safety and basic avalanche training,
- Kite coaching (this trip is for intermediate kite flyers and intermediate to advanced skiers/boarders). Landing, launching, hill climbing, terrain assessment and route planning, mountain wind effects, and more.
- Snow kite equipment demos - learn about and try our ram air and single skin snow kites, snow kite harnesses.

Your guides will escort your back country adventure as well as provide you kite coaching.  Your guides are Jennie Milton and Mike Walker - Professional snowkiters / kitesurfers who have a combine experience of over 37 years of international snow kite and power kite coaching experience to share.

You will learn to ride different locations and terrain types in the spectacular Kosziuosko National Park wilderness including open flats, hill climbing, peaks and ridges and we will seek out or terrain features to slash like waves, quarter pipes and roll overs.

All participants will be require to use touring gear while adventuring in the back country.  This will allow us to get to some great launch areas as well as providing an essential safety back up plan to walk home.
You can bring your own or hire the gear from our partner Harrows snowsport near the skitube at Bullocks Flat.
The required gear includes appropriate skis/board, boots, skins, and avalanche pack (beacon shovel probe) To hire the full kit will cost $375 for 7 days. Details

Location and Accomodation

Charlotte Pass is the Australia's highest ski resort at 1765m.  Located up the valley from Perisher in the NSW Alpine region, Charlotte Pass is accessible only by over-snow "Snow Cat" vehicles in winter.  Crowds are light and the well groomed slopes are perfect for beginner to intermediate skiers and boarders.  The resort is perfect for our speed riding course giving advanced skiers a new element to draw on.  The open groomed slopes and thin crowds make Charlotte Pass the perfect place to learn speed riding.

Your accomodation for the Thrills winter escape is at Pygmy Possum Lodge as a guest of the Eleoura Ski club .  Kitethrills has booked an entire wing of the lodge for our group.  All rooms have their own ensuite and either queen beds, long doubles, or two singles.  You can choose either to stay with a friend or family in a double room or have a rpive room with a single supplement fee (subsidised by kitethrills) at $90/night

A well appointed kitchen is shared for lodge guests however your Thrills tour will be fully catered so you can relax in the evening with a glass of your favourite and enjoy reliving the days adventures while our photography pros edit your pics and videos into digital forever memories.

FAQ'S

Do I need prior experience? Beginners can be accommodated in private lessons but the short answer is Yes you need experience - Our back country expeditions are only suitable for intermediate level skiers/boarders/kiters.    Beginner skiers should develop their skills inbounds before heading to the back country or learning to fly a canopy. Beginner power kite fliers should develop their skills in water and steady coastal winds.  Jennie will be available for private lessons on the days we do not venture to the back country. This course is aimed at more advanced back country adventuring with kites.

What if the weather doesn't co-operate? Our back country snow kite activities can take place in a wild range of wind / weather conditions that are highly likely to occur during our 7 day stay.   September is great time to be in the alps.  Spring snow and fair weather are common.

What if I have specific dietary requirements? We are catering for group of about 15 people and accomodating your needs is well within our capabilities.  Just let us know and we will make sure your expectations are met or exceeded.

Can I use  my own gear? Yes.
Snow Kite:  your regular inflatable water kite will work fine.  Your regular seat or waist harness will also be perfectly adequate.  If you'd like to try snow specific equipment get in touch with Mike at Kitethrills to discuss your needs.  Kitethrills is an Ozone dealer - the leading brand in snow kite equipment.
Back country - we require you to use back country touring skis or snowboards, with skins and avalanche pack of probe shovel and beacon.
Alpine touring skis and bindings can be set to walk mode with skins and free-heel features, or alpine downhill mode with regular alpine fixed-heel features.
If you don't have alpine touring equipment it can be hired at Harrow Snow Sport at Bullocks Flat where you will park your car.

How can I get there?
If you're driving, head to the ski tube from Bullocks Flat on the Alpine Way then onto a snow cat from Perisher to Charlotte Pass.

If you're flying in, hover your helicopter over the lodge and fast rope down on to the lodge balcony, where we will hand you your scotch and invite you into the hot tub.

Fixed wing transport - commercial public flights land in Canberra and Cooma with a bus ride to Bullock Flat, however, bring this up when you're booking and if numbers permit, we may be able to arrange a group transport option.

Can I bring my non-kiting partner or family / friend? yes - the more the merrier
